Option of 'green energy' coming

Georgia Power Co., which relies heavily on coal-burning power plants for electricity, plans to offer "green energy" to environmentally minded homes and businesses willing to pay more each month.

Under long-awaited plans being filed today with the Public Service Commission, Georgia Power's 2 million customers would be able to purchase "blocks" of electricity to be generated from renewable energy sources such as landfill gases, wind and solar power.

The program is similar to those already offered by more than 300 utilities across the country, including 16 Georgia nonprofit electric membership corporations.
