Solarize Decatur-DeKalb Launches to Over-sized Crowd

Following the success of Solarize Athens, GIPL, Decatur Sustainability Board, Environment Georgia and Solar Crowd Source have launched a new campaign in Decatur and DeKalb County - Solarize Decatur-DeKalb. The first town hall was held on June 14 at Decatur First United Methodist Church in downtown Decatur. Organizers were thrilled with the over 150+ in attendance. “It’s always exciting to have to add more chairs for a presentation,” said Beth Bond, GIPL board member.“Solar is such an important part of the solution to big problems like climate change and air pollution,” explained Kate McGregor Mosley, executive director of GIPL. “It is exciting to see people coming together to help solve those problems as a community.” GIPL will be reaching out to churches in Decatur and DeKalb Co. to talk about being a part of the Solarize program in the coming months.“Decatur and DeKalb Co. have the sun, the engaged citizens, and the possible workforce to be a solar leader in the South,” said Environment Georgia director Jennette Gayer. “Solar energy is a proven, pollution-free resource, Solarize Decatur-DeKalb will help jump start our community’s big solar potential.”“The Decatur Community has some great examples of solar at work and a great track record of promoting sustainability, but it is time to take it to the next level, “ said Greg Coleson, chair of the Decatur Sustainability Board. “We are excited for homeowners, businesses and even our local governments to take advantage of this program and go solar!”Presentations were made on how the program will run, the advantages of doing a group buying solar program and then attendees were allowed to provide input on different topics to allow interested participants help shape the program. Topics ranged from quality, pricing, community project, to more technical aspects. Attendees were asked to vote on their top three priorities to help organizers choose details in regards to choosing solar installers.The organizing committee is finalizing the details for the RFP (Request For Proposal) for solar installers to submit bids. There will be multiple public meetings to educate as many residents as possible in participating. All Decatur and DeKalb County residents, businesses and local governments are encouraged to submit an application to see if solar is right for their location.
