GIPL’S NEW

REWILDING PROGRAM

A Holistic Approach to Land Use…

Georgia Interfaith Power and Light’s ReWilding program focuses on the ecological regeneration of congregational lands, restoring natural processes, and fostering more resilient ecosystems and communities. Sustainable land use stands as a pivotal, and often overlooked, climate solution. Conserving forests and natural habitats, managing food production and consumption, and improving land use can help mitigate the worst impacts associated with rising temperatures and climate change. Sustainable landscaping techniques and the “ReWilding” of sacred grounds are critical for increasing carbon storage in soil and plants, attracting pollinators and wildlife, and restoring ecological health.

Join the Pilot!

We are excited to pilot our ReWilding program with three congregations in metro Atlanta in Summer 2024 and anticipate launching the full program this fall. This program will include invasive species removal, landscape policies, lawn alternatives, native plants and pollinators, community gardens, tree plantings, permeable parking lots, rain/flood gardens, and more!

As part of this pilot, congregations will be connected with a partner organization who will provide a land assessment/sustainable landscaping plan. Depending on the congregation’s land use needs/interests, possible partners include Shades of Green Permaculture, Reforest ATL, Trees Atlanta, and the Atlanta Ecumenical Urban Farm Network.

Each selected congregation will receive $150 to offset the cost of the assessment and $1,000 to implement the recommendations. Total cost of the assessment varies by partner and property size. Congregations who have already received a land assessment/plan are also encouraged to apply.

Applications will be open until June 21 and decisions will be made by July 5. Questions? Please contact GIPL’s Program Director, Hannah Shultz.
