Join Georgia Interfaith Power & Light (GIPL) and faith leaders from across Georgia in committing to pray and fast for our Common Home from sunrise on July 9 to sunrise on July 10. As people of faith, we’ll raise a collective call for courage and accountability from the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) and stand in solidarity with frontline communities disproportionately impacted by environmental injustice.
You are encouraged to participate in whatever ways are meaningful to you. To support your practice, here are some suggested interfaith prayer and fasting ideas:
Spend time in silence and meditation for the health of our planet and those most affected by climate change.
Fast from food, technology, or convenience as a spiritual discipline to refocus your attention on justice, humility, and community.
Pray the hours—set an alarm to pause for five minutes of reflection or prayer at specific times.
Read sacred texts from your tradition or others that speak to stewardship, justice, and care for the earth.
Light a candle or incense in remembrance of lives already lost or harmed due to environmental injustice and in hope for a better future.
Write a letter or prayer to one of the PSC Commissioners, offering a faithful plea for just, courageous leadership.
Join GIPL’s communal online and in-person prayer gatherings throughout the day.
Formally, the vigil will begin with a short invocation on Zoom at 8 a.m. on July 9. Throughout the day, we'll hold five additional communal prayers and moments of silence at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., 4 p.m., 6 p.m., and 9 p.m. Each will honor a specific PSC Commissioner and be shared via GIPL's Facebook and Instagram pages.
If you're in the Atlanta area, we invite you to join us in person at Trinity United Methodist Church (Downtown Atlanta) between 6 and 10 p.m. for a time of collective prayer, art, worship, and witness. The evening will include prayer stations and opportunities for diverse expressions of faith and justice. Validated parking is available in the deck adjacent to the church.
We'll conclude the vigil at 8 a.m. on July 10, again at Trinity UMC, with a final prayer and press conference as we await the PSC's decision on Georgia's energy future. This moment will mark both the culmination of 24 hours of faithful action and the beginning of more continued work for climate justice in Georgia and beyond.
