Georgia Interfaith Power and Light Announces $57,000 in Energy Efficiency Grants to Congregations

DECATUR, Ga. — Environmental nonprofit, Georgia Interfaith Power and Light (GIPL), has awarded $57,000 in matching grants to 20 faith communities in Georgia to reduce energy consumption on their campuses next year. As part of their larger Power-Wise program, these grants, of up to $7,000 per congregation, are designed to help faith communities lower their carbon footprint by reducing the amount of energy they consume.

Award Recipients include Ahavath Achim Synagogue (Atlanta), All Saints Episcopal Church (Warner Robbins), Central Congregational United Church of Christ (Atlanta), Clairmont Presbyterian Church (Decatur), Cumming First United Methodist (Cumming), Fayette Presbyterian Church (Fayetteville), First Presbyterian Church of Savannah (Savannah), ILM Academy (Roswell), Memorial Drive Ministries (Atlanta), North Decatur Presbyterian Church (Decatur),  North Decatur United Methodist Church (Decatur), St. Clare's Episcopal (Blairsville), St. David's Episcopal Church (Roswell), St. James the Apostle Catholic Church (McDonough), St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church (Hapeville), St. Joseph Catholic Church (Marietta), St. Mark's Episcopal Church (LaGrange), Temple Beth Tikvah (Roswell), Unitarian Universalist Church of Savannah (Savannah), and Unitarian Universalist Metro Atlanta North (Roswell).

The inefficient use of electricity and natural gas in our buildings makes up more than 30 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. Funds will support everything from LED lighting to attic insulation, building automation systems, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) upgrades, and more.

“In helping faith communities reduce their energy costs, we are not only helping slow climate change but also providing the opportunity for congregations to invest more resources in their missions and ministries that directly serve their communities,” says Codi Norred, Executive Director of GIPL.

Faith communities that participate in GIPL’s Power-Wise program may save up to 20 percent on their energy bills by implementing the recommended retrofits and upgrades.

Since 2003, GIPL has performed over 450 low-cost energy audits for congregations and awarded over one million dollars in matching grants. GIPL’s next Power-Wise matching grant cycle opens on Aug. 15, 2024. Learn more at gipl.org/power-wise.
