Zero-Interest Solar Loan
One of the greatest barriers to congregational solar projects is the initial upfront cost. Georgia Interfaith Power & Light (GIPL) offers an interest-free, non-collateralized solar loan program to help fund the installation of photovoltaic systems for electricity and solar water heating systems (as long as they are replacing electric water heaters).
These loans help offset the initial capital investment in implementing clean energy systems. Congregations may apply for a loan of up to $15,000 with a repayment term of up to three years.
To apply, congregations must complete an application and submit supporting documentation for financial review. GIPL evaluates each application to determine eligibility and loan viability. If approved, the loan will be formalized through a promissory note and loan agreement at the time of disbursement. In some cases, a co-signer may be required.
Congregations are invited to apply for the loan at any time. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Funds are limited and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. If funds are not available at the time of an application, the congregation will be added to a waitlist and notified once funds are restored.
Eligible congregations should either be enrolled in GIPL’s Solar-Wise program or have a proposal from a solar installer that is under active consideration by the congregation. Priority will be given to congregations that have demonstrated a commitment to incorporating environmental stewardship into the life of their congregation. Examples of this commitment may include the following activities or other comparable actions:
Establishment of a Green Team.
Engagement in prior energy conservation work (participation in GIPL’s Power-Wise program, other energy efficiency measures, political advocacy, etc.).
Commitment to including themes of environmental stewardship in worship and educational programs.
Congregations that receive funding will be required to offer opportunities for GIPL to address their clergy, trustees, and building committees (or comparable decision-making bodies) and the congregation as a whole (through worship or educational classes).
